Rollers rubbish in SSW

The Rollers up-and-down start to the season continued on Sunday with a thumping loss against Somerset West at Radlof Park.

As beautiful as it got for the Rollers in Somerset West...

Matches between the two sides have usually been close affairs, with last season’s encounter finishing in a tie, but there was to be no biting of the nails this time around.

As it turns out, it was a rubbish toss to win. Both captains wanted to bowl first, and it proved not the greatest decision ever made.

Initially, though, it looked a fair call as the Rollers took wickets at regular intervals, with James Lamprecht producing a great display of line and length bowling to finish with figures of 7-1-13-2.

Hannes Carlson (2/27) brought himself on – replacing a ‘generous’ Hannes Moore – and immediately rolled back the years with two wickets in his first three balls.

Next up was Tom Stayplton-Smith, who took over from James and maintained the pressure with a fantastic spell of 7-3-11-2, including the big wicket of Bobby Londt for 20.

The Oaks were struggling at 94/7, but Herman (32*) restored some parity, before a few big hits from Danie (16) and the appropriately named Biff (14*) saw them to 159/9 off 35 overs – a steep target on a very slow outfield and a wicket that was becoming increasingly unpredictable.

And the run-chase could not have got off to a worse start…

Jarryd van Wyk (1) was LBW early on, before a very babelaas Ryan Cooper (8) – who even managed to forget his kitbag at home – knicked one behind.

Neville Cooper (4), Johann Roux (2) and Casper (1) went in quick succession to leave the Rollers in a heap of shit at 17/5, before Tom (11) and James put a stop to the rot with a 30-run partnership.

However, the damage had been done early on, meaning James’ hard-fought 35 counted for little other than some respectability as Cameran Young (1), Andrew Young (10) and Hannes (3) lost their wickets and the Rollers were dismissed for a paltry 87.

We gave a slightly better account of ourselves in the post-match fines, though Biff again got the better of most of us.

Thanks again to Bobby, Leslie and the rest of the Oaks – we’ll try and be more competitive next year.
